A budding ballet dancer and an athlete who carried Usain Bolt’s kit at the Olympics were just two of the young people honoured with Jack Petchey awards at a ceremony.
Members of The Deborah Day Theatre School Trust, which has also won prizes in the foundation’s Glee Club challenge, received medals for achievement in a number of areas.
One of the young stars was Janine Cook, 18, who has been with the theatre school since she was four and was recognised for her achievements and determination to succeed.
She was a junior student with the royal ballet and an associate with Central School of Ballet, and spent her £200 prize on a trip to see a West End show.
Newham and Essex Beagles Athletics Club also saw some of its 400 young members presented with awards.
Chantel Grey, 18, was recognised for her dedication to athletics through taking an assistant coaches course and continuing to train while juggling studying and a part time job.
She volunteered as a kit carrier during London 2012 and was lucky enough to carry the gear of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
She was presented with her award by Christine Ohuruogo and put her money towards the purchase of a timergate for the club.
Mark Richardson, a 400m runner who attended the ceremony, said: “It was great to be involved in an event that helps young people to feel valued and significant.
“Self-belief is fundamental in any walk of life and events such as these help to nurture self-confidence and personal growth.”
Set up in 1999, the Jack Petchey Foundation recognises and supports young people who make positive contribution to society.
