A primary school is set to double in size after planning permission was granted for its expansion.

St Joachim’s Catholic Primary School, in Shipman Road, Custom House, has been given planning permission for extending the school building, allowing it to increase from one form per year – or 210 pupils in total – to two forms per year, or 420 pupils.

The two-storey extension will see the construction of eight new classrooms as well as alterations to the school hall, toilet areas and the staff area.

According to the strategic development committee report, the school is oversubscribed and the population of the surrounding area is set to increase with a number of new residential developments.
