Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the saying goes, but the new Crossrail station at Custom House was put up in just a year and a day.

The final piece of the structure has been erected, meaning the next phase of fitting out the interior can begin.

Large sections of the station, situated in the Royal Docks, were built 130 miles away in the Laing O’Rourke facility in Steetley, near Sheffield.

The 825 components were then transported to east London and assembled on the site using a purpose-built crane.

This construction process helped to simplify the building process, making it safer for workers as well as reducing disruption to those living in the area.

Project manager Mujahid Khalid said: “Piecing together the 825 sections that make up the station’s structure has been a bit like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

“It’s been impressive to see the building go up so quickly and efficiently and a lot of hard work has gone in from everyone on the project. “

The next stage will see escalators and lifts installed into the building, which is set to open in 2018.
