It was standing room only at the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium as family and friends turned out to celebrate the life of a 101-year-old woman.
Florence Owen, who lived in Romford Road, Forest Gate, died on August 6, just two weeks before her 102nd birthday.
Her son David Owen said: “It was a really nice funeral.
“The weather held out and we all went over to the Golden Fleece afterwards.”
Born in Poplar in 1913, Florence was buried on Friday alongside her husband, Cedric Henry Owen, who died in 1968.
As a young woman she was a keen amateur dressmaker and later went on to work as a coil maker at a factory in Marshgate Lane, Stratford.
David said: “She was quite well known in the community.
“She was a family woman, and she was generally well known in her social circle.”
He added that Florence was a “sensible woman”.
He said: “She didn’t smoke, she only drank socially and she was sensible with what she ate.
“I think that’s what helped her live so long.”
Florence is survived by four of her five children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
