A fundraiser has been set up to help the family of a young East Ham father who died after he was detained by police in Beckton.

Edir Frederico Da Costa, who was known as Edson, was travelling in a car with two other people in Woodcocks near Tollgate Road on June 15 when police stopped them at around 10pm.

During the stop, officers used force and CS gas to detain the 25-year-old.

Edson was rushed to Newham Hospital in an ambulance and was on life support for six days before he died on Wednesday.

The father-of-one’s girlfriend is pregnant with his second child and the pair had discussed marriage just hours before Edson’s death, according to her cousin.

His family have launched an online fundraiser to help raise money for his funeral and his “beautiful son”.

After less than 24 hours mourners have already donated almost £1,285 in memory of “a priceless soul”.

Edson’s post mortem concluded “there were no injuries to suggest severe force was used” on him.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is sending investigators out door-to-door in the area to find any witnesses that can help with an independent investigation into how he died.

They have said they are aware of “unhelpful speculation” about the young man’s injuries and have begun analysing evidence about his death.

They urge anyone who witnessed the police stop to email woodcocksroad@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk or call 0800 096 9073.
