Specialist police officers have recovered a suspected firearm with nine rounds of ammunition from a property in Manor Park today.

The seizure is the second find by officers from the Metropolitan police’s Trident Gang Crime Command in the last 24 hours.

It follows a proactive, intelligence-led operation in which officers searched an address in Dersingham Avenue at around 8am.

The suspected firearm, believed to be a revolver was recovered from the property.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and ammunition. He remains in custody at an east London police station.

Officers from Trident are continuing their investigation.

The firearm and ammunition recovery was the result of Trident’s ongoing efforts to target gang members and organised criminals operating in east London.

Yesterday afternoon officers from Trident, supported by Specialist Crime and Operations Specialist Firearms officers, recovered a suspected firearm, believed to be a Baikal semi-automatic handgun from a property in South Norwood, Croydon.

Three people - two men both aged 25 and a 24 year old woman - were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life. They remain in custody at a south London police station.

Detective Chief Superintendent Dean Haydon, from the Trident Gang Crime Command, said: “This is another example of how Trident will proactively target and arrest criminals who are involved in gun crime and gang-related criminal activity. The seizure of these weapons has prevented two lethal firearms from falling into the hands of organised criminals and gang members, preventing them from being used in crime and potentially injuring someone.

“Trident’s sustained activity has resulted in significant reductions of all gang-related crime types. In particular, gun crime is currently at an unprecedented low in the capital, the lowest it has been in five years. The number of times a gun has been discharged continues to fall, with a 20 per cent reduction last financial year, with a further 27 per cent this year, this equates to over 170 fewer shootings.”
