A driver who was travelling at twice the speed limit when he knocked down and killed a father-of-four has been jailed for two years.

Aminul Alom, of no fixed address, was driving his BMW at 61mph along Romford Road, Manor Park – which has a speed limit of just 30mph – in the early hours of April 14 last year.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how the 26-year-old was still going at around 40mph when he hit Shofi Ullah, who was crossing the road after getting off a bus.

The 45-year-old suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene near the junction of Dersingham Avenue.

Sentencing Alom, judge Sarah Canavan said: “You worked as a bus driver with an exemplary record and all these matters make it more inconceivable that you find yourself before the court on such a serious matter.

“I have viewed the footage and it is inexplicable why anyone would think it was a safe way to drive.”

She added: “As a result of your driving Mr Ullah lost his life. Nothing I can do in sentencing can restore his life and nor is the sentence a reflection on the value of his life.

“He was a loving husband and father and your actions have taken him from his family and wider community.”

Alom pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and will serve half of his two year sentence before being released on licence.

He was also disqualified from driving for five years.

Members of Mr Ullah’s family wept in the public gallery as the sentence was delivered.
