A MAN who attacked five patients and two staff at Newham General Hospital has been sectioned by police and health experts.

The man, who is a patient at the hospital, carried out the attacks in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two elderly patients who were hit with a weapon in their hospital beds are lucky to be alive, relatives said.

Police were called to the hospital at 12.40am on Saturday.

One woman, aged 75, has head injuries. Another, aged 80, who was hit on the arms and legs has severe bruises after she pleaded with the attacker to stop hitting her fellow patient.

Both of them are now recovering in the hospital ward but are “feeling scared” say relatives.

Police said a 22-year-old man, who was arrested, who was in custody under 24-hour guard. He has now been sectioned while the Crown Prosecution Service considers what action to take.
