Three men have been arrested after a dramatic series of car crashes on bank holiday Monday afternoon that have left a man seriously injured.

Police were patrolling in Stratford High Street at 4.40pm when they saw a car hit a man as he crossed the road.

The driver didn’t stop, and headed east up to Westfield Avenue where it crashed into two other vehicles.

The car was abandoned there and the driver fled.

Officers arrested three males and they are now in custody at an east London police station.

The air ambulance was scrambled to help the victim of the hit-and-run, and fire engines came to the scene.

The man, who is believed to be in his thirties, has serious injuries and was taken by road ambulance to an east London hospital.

His condition was described this morning as “critical”.

London Ambulance Service also checked over two patients from the second crash. They had minor injuries but did not need to go to hospital.

Detectives from Newham are investigation alongside colleagues from the Roads and Transport Policing Command.
