A black rail worker was racially abused after asking a man to take his feet from train seats.

The conductor was targeted after making the request on three separate occasions on two services. The man eventually got off at Wanstead Park in Forest Gate.

Their first encounter came on the 11.23 London Overground Barking to Gospel Oak service.

After the passenger was asked twice to remove his feet from the seat, the man, who boarded the train at Haringay Green Lanes, made offensive racial comments. He left the train at Gospel Oak.

The man was seen again that day on the 12.10 Gospel Oak to Barking, and placed his feet on the seats once again.

“When the victim requested he remove them, again he was subjected to yet more verbal abuse alongside a feamle passenger who interjected,” Pc Roger Andrews, from British Transport Police (BTP), said.

“The victim was understandably left shocked and shaken by the experience. No one should be subjected to abuse of any kind when travelling on the rail network.”

The man was left getting off at Wanstead Park at 12.30pm.

BTP have released an image of man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident. Anyone with information should contact 0800 40 50 40 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting B3/LNA of 29/06/2012.
