Four men have been given prison sentences after driving a car into a 16-year-old in Upton Park, leaving him with life-changing injuries.

Blackfriars Crown Court heard how the boy was found unconscious in Bishops Avenue with severe head and leg injuries in December 2015.

Imran Habib, 20, of Wyatt Road, Forest Gate, and Subhan Sajjad, 23, of Bradleigh Avenue, Grays, were given 14 years in prison and a nine year driving disqualification. after being found guilty of GBH with intent.

Mohammed Choudhary, 28, of Plashet Grove, East Ham, and Haroon Ahmed, 22, of Barking Road, Upton Park, were handed 14 month and 16 month jail sentences respectively after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice and given a 30 month driving ban.

On December 5, 2015, police were called to a fight in Plashet Road. Shortly after, Sajjad and Habib drove away in an Audi A1, driving around side streets before knocking the victim off his bike.

When officers found the boy, he was taken to hospital and kept in for two weeks to receive treatment for his head and leg injuries.

Soon after, Choudhary reported his car stolen. When enquiries proved this to be false, he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

During his interview, Choudhary told officers he’d given his car to Ahmed who gave it to Sajjad. He said that after the incident, Sajjad told him the vehicle had been involved in a crash and he should report it stolen in an attempt to create an alibi for themselves.

In July 2017, Choudhary was charged with preventing the course of justice. In February 2016, Sajjad was arrested for a different matter, then further arrested after CCTV evidence linked him to the incident. He was charged with attempted murder in July 2017.

Officers arrested Ahmed in May 2016 when they saw him driving a blue Maserati, which he crashed when trying to evade them. He was charged in July 2017 for helping Sajjad flee.

In December 2016, Habib turned himself in and he was charged with attempted murder in July 2017.

DI Robert Allen, from the Met’s Trident and Area Crime Command, said: “This was a tenacious and painstaking investigation which has seen four dangerous offenders brought to justice.

“The young victim suffered life-changing injuries and I hope this sentence brings him some measure of comfort and closure to the family.”
