A vandal from East Ham has been fined £100 for urinating in Barking’s Abbey Ruins.

When the 23-year-old was approached by officers, he continued to urinate in his trousers.

The officers issued a Fixed Penalty Notice, which he has 28 days to pay. It’ll be reduced to £60 if he pays within 14.

Barking and Dagenham Council have already introduced two public space protection orders (PSPOs) in the town centre and Broad Street in an effort to reduce spitting, urinating and street drinking. Since they came into effect in March, the council has seen orders carried out successfully 30 times.

Jonathon Toy from the enforcement services said: “We want our residents to feel safe and not feel intimidated by groups of people who assemble in the town centre and the surrounding areas.

“We have already shown we will take strong action and our enforcement officers will continue to issue penalty notices against anyone who breaks the rules.”
