Violence marred West Ham’s historic last game at the Boleyn Ground delaying kick off by 45 minutes.

Home fans hurled bottles at Manchester United’s team coach with the Met police saying a police officer and member of the public were injured during the disorder.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware that a number of items were thrown towards Manchester United’s coach this evening.

“One police officer and a member of the public sustained minor injuries. There have been no arrests.

“An appropriate policing plan is in place.”

The game finally started at 8.30pm as a heavy police presence remained in the area following trouble in the build up to the game.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney told Sky Sports West Ham fans had “smashed up” the team bus, saying: “It wasn’t nice. The coach got smashed up.” He added: “We know it’s a big game for West Ham, big night for them, leaving the stadium, but I’m sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done.”

West Ham will end an 112 year affiliation with Upton Park after securing a deal to play at Stratford’s Olympic Stadium from next season.

Co-owner David Sullivan told Sky Sports Manchester United contributed to problems by turning up late.

He said: “I’m gravely disappointed, more for our supporters. What people forget is they’ve got trains and buses to get home and we’ve got a wonderful, wonderful show after the game for them. Many just can’t stay any more.
