Beckton drivers warned they could face prison

A group of drivers have been warned that they face fines or a prison sentence if they are caught committing offences.

The 10 vehicle owners in Beckton have received direct warnings in letters from Newham Council highlighting the consequences if they are caught committing offences in the area.

The warnings are in response to series of incidents where vehicles were observed driving illegally at high speed and their owners being involved acts of anti-social behaviour.

The council is concerned at an increase in vehicles driving at excessive speed on public roads, causing serious injuries or even fatalities.

The letters are part of a wide-ranging operation in partnership with the Metropolitan Police which includes undercover speed check and the use of portable and wireless CCTV cameras.

Drivers also face the prospect of referrals to their insurance companies which could lead to restrictions or even cancellation of their policy and anti-social behaviour orders that could ban them from certain parts of the borough.

Cllr Unmesh Desai, executive member for crime and anti-social behaviour, said: “In the Beckton area we have received a large number of complaints from the local community where they are being disturbed as far as a mile away due to the engine, exhaust and other noise disrupting their sleep.
