An Upton Park man described as a “prolific cycle thief” has been given a five year asbo.

John Arthey, 27, of Queens Road, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday, August 20 after pleading guilty to burglary.

He was also told to pay compensation to the victim, whose bike was taken during the burglary on Hermit Road, Canning Town on August 20, 2013.

Arthey, who has a history of offending, is prevented from having any lock cutting equipment, possessing a bike without proof of ownership and advertising a bike or parts of one for sale under the terms of his asbo.

Supt Rob Revill, of roads and transport policing command, said: “This is an excellent result which has seen a prolific cycle thief receive a suitably restrictive asbo.

“Cycle theft is a crime which has a huge impact to victims, and this is an example of how we are working with Transport for London using a range of tactics and legislation such as asbos to tackle cycle theft.”

Arthey also received a 16 month suspended jail term, a six month drug rehabilitation order and a three month curfew.
