A 28-year-old man attracted to his window by a disturbance in Savage Gardens, Beckton spotted four men breaking into a blue Peugeot 306.

A short while later the car was started, the men got inside and it was driven away. Police found the car in Perry Avenue.

Newham Crime prevention advisor Pc Andy Whitefield said this week of the 3.30am on September 15 incident: “Most vehicle crime is preventable. It can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car. If at all possible, leave nothing on view. Make sure you close the windows and sunroof; lock the doors and activate any security devices when leaving your car unattended. Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for a long time.

“If possible, park in a busy, well-lit area and consider fitting anti-tamper screws to number plates.

“By following these vehicle common sense tips it could save you from becoming a victim of crime.”
