Officers from British Transport Police are investigating an allegation of racial and verbal abuse on board a train from Stratford to Forest Gate.
Two women in their twenties were said to have had racial abuse shouted at them by a man in the late evening incident on Friday, July 29.
Officers are carrying out a number of enquiries as part of their investigation including seizing CCTV evidence and appealing for witnesses.
PC Bellamy from BTP, said: “Hate crime will simply not be tolerated and we are working hard to trace the person responsible.
“We want all Londoners to feel safe and welcome on public transport and I would encourage anyone who witnesses hate crime to report it to us so we can investigate.”
