Two men have been questioned over a suspected ‘chemical incident’ which caused London City Airport to be evacuated.

The pair, aged 32 and 47, were interviewed under caution yesterday for possession of pepper spray – an offence contrary to the Aviation Security Act 1982.

A 25-year-old man arrested on Saturday on suspicion of using a noxious substance to cause serious damage has been eliminated from inquiries.

Friday’s incident saw around 500 passengers and airport evacuated from the terminal for around three hours.

Two people were taken to hospital and 25 more treated at the scene for breathing difficulties.

The airport closure led to travel chaos as all flights were suspended and incoming planes were diverted.

The incident is not being treated as terrorist-related, and officers from the Aviation Policing CID continue to investigate.
