University of East London student pleads guilty to credit card fraud

An architecture student at The University of East London has admitted attempting to buy more than £3,000 of designer clothing and accessories with a fake credit card.

Richard Quitaleg, aged 23, of Claughton Road, Plaistow, tried to dupe staff at luxury store Louis Vuitton, in New Bond Street, central London, with a counterfeit American Express card and a bogus Californian driving licence. He tried to buy clothing and a bag worth £3,005 on July 19, 2012 a court heard.

Quitaleg yesterday (January 2) pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court to fraud and possession of an identity document with improper intent.

Prosecutor Lesley Jones said the shop assistant became suspicious after the American Express card was declined.

Adjourning sentence for the preparation of a pre-sentence report Judge Nicholas Lorain-Smith said: “All options are open but it does not seem to me to necessitate immediate custody.”

Quitaleg will be sentenced on January 30.
