A fly-tipper from East Ham has been fined £350 for his part in dumping waste in Essex that stretched out for a mile.

Abdul Mumin, of Sheridan Road, admitted the charge at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 12.

The 24-year-old was also told to pay £250 in compensation to the council, £560 in prosecution costs and a £35 victim surcharge.

He was among five people to admit their part in dumping waste at Cory’s Wharf, Purfleet, in November 2014.

It cost Thurrock Council £97,250 to clear up the domestic and industrial waste.

A sixth defendant denied the charge and will face trial in August.

Another of the accused, 25-year-old Fatima Begum of Sherrard Road, East Ham, did not appear in court and will be summonsed.

Cllr Terry Brookes, Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “This sends out a clear message to everyone who thinks they’ve found a short cut to getting rid of their rubbish. Don’t do it.

“When we find evidence in fly-tipping we will follow it through and those we prosecute will find themselves with a record.”
