A temporary community garden full of herbs and vegetables will open on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday.
Visitors and residents can join in some green-fingered fun to celebrate the launch between 1-4pm, and can even plant flora in pots to take home.
With the hot weather set to continue, thirsty gardeners will be able to jump on a smoothie bike to make their own pedal-powered drinks, or relax with a freshly made virgin cocktail of herbal tea made with herbs from freshly picked from the garden.
Based in Chobham Manor, near to the Lee Valley VeloPark, the garden was created in partnership with Groundwork London and will remain in place until December 2016, at which time the site will be developed as part of the Chobham Manor neighbourhood featuring a new community space and nursery.
Mobile Garden City will then move to a new pre-development site on the Park.
Ahead of the launch a number of children from Chobham Academy got their hands dirty planting vegetation of their own.
Pupil Lucas Mason said: “I am so excited that this lovely new garden is going to be open so close to my school.”
“I can’t wait to see the big pumpkins growing in the garden,” added classmate Ebunoluwa Olantunji.
“I am happy that I was one of the first people to plant something here.”
Over the next 18 months, a series of activities, training sessions and seasonal workshops will take place at the garden on planting soft fruits and vegetables, controlling garden pests without using chemicals and jam and chutney-making among others.
All the sessions are free, fully facilitated by Groundwork’s specialist community gardeners, with all tools and materials provided.
Everyone is welcome and no gardening experience is necessary.
