A 10-month-old football club whose away kit went viral in Spain is to welcome its 1,000th member.
Clapton Community Football Club will award its newest member, eight-year-old Arlo, his owner’s certificate and member’s badge during half-time in its match against Eastfield FC tomorrow.
A club spokesman said: “The support we receive every day would not exist without a commitment to football that is owned, operated and played by and for supporters.”
The club has a reputation for taking a stance against racism, sexism and homophobia since starting in February this year by fans boycotting Clapton FC over its ownership.
But Clapton CFC wants to return to Clapton FC’s Old Spotted Dog ground in Forest Gate.
Matches are currently held at The Stray Dog in Walthamstow.
In August, the club’s away kit gained attention in Spain for using the colours of the International Brigades, volunteer units defending the left-wing government against General Francisco Franco’s forces in the Spanish Civil War.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 2pm.
