City Airport has given £35,000 to projects aiming to help people in east London.

It's the second round of donations from its community fund this year, giving up to £3,000 to 14 charities in boroughs like Newham and Barking and Dagenham.

Just Enough Group was one of the four groups in Newham to get one of the grants. It plans to use the money to deliver day-long knife crime workshops to eight schools, reaching around 720 eight to 11-year-olds.

"We are delighted to be able to receive these funds," said Bonney Baggaley, Just Enough Group's chief operations officer. "Receiving support like this enables charities like the Just Enough Group to get important key messages into schools."

One charity in Barking and Dageham bagged some of the cash - Excellent Tutoring Resource ELLA. It's programme supports young people who aren't in education, employment or training (NEETs) from a Bame background.

The programme tries to impart employability skills, encourage personal development and give people opportunities to gain work experience through volunteering.

Representatives from the City Airport, local authorities and the airline FlyBe chose the grant winners. They said successful bids for money focused on things like building stronger communities, raising aspirations and creating "pathways into employment".

Nazmin Begum is corporate responsibility and community engagement executive at the airport.

She said: "We are proud to champion the work of grassroots organisations that make a real difference to families and individuals."

"Receiving so many submissions to the Community Fund over the last six months just demonstrates the wealth of creative and supportive programmes being run."

City Airport finished consultations on its draft master plan for 2020 to 2035 in mid-October. It includes more "flexible" flight times on the weekends. There is currently a mandatory 24 hour break from 12.30pm on Saturdays.

That, and proposals to increase the number of flights, have been met with resistance from politicians and some people living under flight paths.

A report on the consultation is due in the new year.
