Around 50 people turned out for an animal blessing at a church car park in Stratford yesterday (Sunday).

Six pets, including five cats and one dog, were brought along to be blessed by Father Anthony Cho at St Francis of Assisi church on Grove Crescent Road.

The animal blessing marked the end of a week long celebration of the church’s patron saint.

The Italian preacher St Francis of Assisi, who died in 1226, was known as the patron saint for animals and the environment.

Farm animals such as goats, chicken and ducks had also been due to arrive for the blessing. But the church friar, who was due to bring the animals in a trailer from a farm in West Berkshire, was unable to make it.
