The gifts, including pencil cases and soft toys, were made at the charity’s sewing project.

Children in the ward aged between 3 and 12 were also treated to a paper chain game.

The three volunteers, who brought along the gifts in a Santa sack, left presents with the parents of some of the more seriously ill children.

The Fatima Foundation is a Forest Gate based charity which aims to improve the social integration of people from Portuguese background, but supports anyone who needs their services and wishes to take part in their projects, regardless of background.

Alda Vieira, the director of the Fatima Foundation, said: “This experience was extremely humbling and rewarding, and we loved every minute we had to be able to give up even in such a small way.”
