Staff and residents at a nursing home joined in the celebrations when one of their fellows reached the grand old age of 100.

Centenarian Violet Pavey was treated to a birthday cake, gifts and flowers at the Manor Farm Nursing Home where Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales read out the contents of the telegram from the Queen.

Miss Pavey, who worked as a nanny in her younger years, told staff at the nursing home in High Street South, East Ham, that the secret to her long life lay in “being happy and not stressing”.

She celebrated her 100th birthday with more than 30 members of her family as well as residents from the home.

Binu Mulloor, office manager at the home, said Miss Pavey had a wonderful memory and enjoyed the day. She was particularly touched at receiving a card from one of her former charges.
