Residents raised more than £2000 for charity during a community reunion last month.

Friends and families came together on June 12 to share their memories of William Morley Close in East Ham but they also used the day as an opportunity to raise money for Richard House Children’s Hospice and the Stop Domestic Violence charity.

Altogether, more than 200 people attended the event at the East Ham working man’s club, and together they raised £2684 for both charities.

Jaime Hunt, 36, who lived on the estate for 20 years, organised the event with another resident, Michael Hewitt.

She said: “It was such a brilliant day. We had a raffle, auction and a DJ. The raffle included some amazing prizes including a spa day in Knightsbridge.

“We also had 12 massive hampers and had vouchers donated from stores in Gallions Reach, which was very generous.

“The local community were also very generous being that Richard House is a local charity. Overall it was very successful, we’ve been inundated with messages to organise another reunion.”

The couple were able to organise the reunion after Michael started a Facebook group for current and former residents of the William Morley Estate in April.

Jaime added: “At the beginning we thought we would only have about 100 people turn up so when we had 200 people, we were absolutely shocked.

“It was really lovely. We had people come from as far as Derbyshire, who took the train down and booked into a hotel just for the event.

“We might hold another reunion next year again, because of the success, and to raise money for charity again.”

The money raised was split equally between the two chosen charities.
