An Afro-Caribbean restaurant is getting the community reading and discussing cultural issues by hosting a monthly book club.
Surrounded by the delicious smells of the Caribbean, Mama Jumbes in Katherine Road, Forest Gate, invites an author to sit in the restaurant and answer questions about their new book before moving on to talk about a short read of the month.
Thursday night was hosted by radio presenter Wise Tola while Robyn Travis popped by to talk about his new book “Prisoner to the Streets” documenting his young life growing up in the thick of gang culture in Hackney before he turned his fortunes around to become a community worker and inspirational speaker.
Book Night at Mama Jumbes is every last Thursday of the month and the next one is on Thursday June 30.
Short stories and guest author suggestions are welcome.
