Campaigners fighting against the proposed Silvertown Tunnel scheme have won an award for their studies into air pollution.
Darryl Chamberlain and Stewart Christie, from the ‘No to Silvertown Tunnel’ campaign, were presented with Clean Air in Cities awards for their efforts to record pollution from road traffic.
The group’s most recent study, conducted alongside fellow campaigners Don’t Dump on Deptford’s Heart and Network for Clean Air, found air pollution already above the legal limit at locations across Greenwich, Lewisham, Blackheath, Deptford and Charlton.
Darryl Chamberlain said: “I’m delighted to have been given the award, and it recognises the hard work put in by our campaign committee and the local people who have helped us in our pollution studies.”
Newham Council launched a campaign for more river crossings in January last year in collaboration with Greenwich Council, claiming a Silvertown Tunnel would provide relief to traffic at the Blackwall Tunnel and support the development of Royal Docks and Greenwich.
