Building jobs on offer during the first phase of re-development at Canning Town’s Rathbone Market, a 48m shops and homes complex, emerge next week.

John Sisk & Son, the scheme’s main contractor, host an Employment Opportunities Open Day on October 15 to encourage recruitment from the Newham area.

As part of the council contract, the company is committed to employing at least 25 per cent of its entire workforce from the borough. The firm is working with the council, workplace, a local recruitment centre, as well as colleges, universities and apprenticeship schemes.

Joining the event were representatives from the subcontractor who can talk about current and future employment opportunities from carpentry, plumbing and plastering to construction and project management.

Chris Harrison, Senior Contracts Manager at John Sisk & Son, said: “As a family-owned and run company and believe it is important that local people should benefit from and contribute to the projects that affect them....Rathbone Market will provide the opportunity for local talent to develop their skills and build experience.”

It takes place at the Rathbone Market Site Office, Barking Road, Canning Town, between 9am-1pm. Cllr Paul Schafer said: “This is a great time for regeneration in Newham and with projects like Rathbone Market as well as the 2012 Olympics we are seeing many employment and development opportunities in the area for residents.”
