Construction has begun on a 40 metre high, “landmark” tower in Stratford as part of major regeneration plans.

The first section of a wooden lattice structure made up of 72 twisted, diagonal laths and 16 horizontal galvanised steel rings has been placed by Sugar House Lane, of Stratford High Street.

The newly landscaped site, rebranded Danes Yard in the Strand East development led by LandProp Holding, will house the structure.

The public space will also includes an exhibition space inside a refurbished Victorian warehouse, a new restaurant and bar, and the offices of LandProp’s headquarters.

Andrew Cobden, country manager of Landprop UK, said: “We are very excited to see the sculpture going up and the public space at Dane’s Yard coming to life.

“It will be a beautiful landmark for the site and we hope local communities will also enjoy it.

“The development is really moving forward and we’re looking forward to unveiling all that Dane’s Yard has to offer in July.”

Designed by architects ARC-ML and engineers eHRW, the tower will narrow in the centre to form a 6.3m wide hyperboloid shape that will open out to 8.3m wide at the top.

Held together by 32,000 bolts, the tower will be left a natural blonde wooden colour but it will be lit up at night by over 600 LED lights inside the sculpture that are programmed to achieve a range of effects which can be viewed from several points around Stratford.
