With cuts of £50million needed to be made by Newham Council next year, those living in the borough are set to have their say on how they want to see money spent and saved.

Proposals are going before cabinet members at tonight’s meeting recommending that a consultation takes place over the summer.

The funding difficulties come after cuts of £106m from central government funding during the five years of the coalition, with further savings required every year until 2019.

The council wants residents to understand the scale of the challenge facing Newham and find out the priorities ahead of setting its budget for 2016/17.

Should the consultation be approved, as it is recommended to be, further details about what form it will take and when it will run will be discussed at next month’s cabinet meeting.

Members will agree only to an information-sharing phase at tomorrow’s meeting, sharing information about the scale of the challenge and raising awareness of the impending consultation.

In the agenda, the council says that it will “need to undertake a wide-ranging consultation and speak to as many individuals across the borough as possible” so that it best reflects the views and priorities of its residents.

It mentions that future decisions could be made that would see a reduction in some services as well as a rise in the charges levied on residents.

While the vast majority of Newham Council’s funding comes from central government, it does receive additional funding through council tax, fines and grants.
