Thousands of Newham residents could be eligible for a free or low-cost replacement boiler according to British Gas.

Some 70 per cent of qualifying Newham households could receive a free boiler and save money on their bills under the new UK-wide energy efficiency scheme, according to the energy provider.

A new boiler typically accounts for half of each household’s energy bill costs so a free or low-cost, A-rated boiler could save consumers an average of £340 a year.

The scheme, which will see an estimated 20,000 new boilers being rolled out across the UK, is open to individuals receiving income-related benefits such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit and Jobseeker’s Allowance only.

However, non-British Gas customers are eligible as are tenants and homeowners.

British Gas spokeswoman, Angela Needle, said: “This new scheme will deliver more efficient boilers to more people for less money. In fact for most people in Newham it will be completely free.

“So, given the availability of free and low cost boilers together with the many benefits they can bring, I’d encourage anyone in Newham in receipt of income related benefits – including Universal Credit and Pension Credit – to get in touch with us to find out more about the scheme and if they qualify.”

A small contribution towards cost improvements will be required if the boiler needs to be relocated rather than replaced.
