Cycling to work could soon be made even easier if planning applications to install Santander Cycle docking stations in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park are approved.

Two applications have been submitted to the London Legacy Development Corporation to install two separate stations in the park.

One will be situated by the London Aquatics Centre, featuring a maximum of 64 docking points, while the other will be near the Copper Box Arena and have space for up to 32 cycles.

The design and access statement claims that “The expansion into Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is strategically aligned with the Mayor’s plans to build up an ambitious legacy following the 2012 Games: new homes, jobs and communities, where new pedestrian and cycle routes would inspire new sustainable travel patterns, improve accessibility, and encourage people to become more active.”

It continues: “It will reach more people by creating the potential for leisure trips in and around the park.

“It will also expand the opportunities of commuting trips using Cycle Hire between east and central London.”

The cycle hire scheme, colloquially known as Boris bikes, allows riders to collect a bike from one of around 750 docks across the capital and return it to another station for a small charge.

Both docking stations will feature a terminal which will allow users who do not have a membership key to pay for their bikes.

They will be situated in areas to the side of footpaths, with the intention on having minimal impact on other park users, and feature a map of the park and surrounding area to help visitors.
