Staff at the Boleyn Tavern have cancelled a controversial live music event on advice from Newham Council after claiming they had their windows smashed by vandals.

The pub on Barking Road, Upton Park - a firm favourite on matchday with West Ham fans - called off the ‘Monsters of Oi’ event that was meant to take place from 3pm to 10pm today following accusations from campaign groups that the bands promoted ‘white power’ ideologies and racism.

A band called ‘IC1’ were initially withdrawn from the line up but staff confirmed this morning the entire event has been called off after its premises was targeted by vandals last night.

The council tweeted from its official Twitter account: “Tonight’s gig at the Boleyn Pub has been cancelled on advice from #NewhamCouncil - Please RT”.

A Newham Council spokesperson added: “Newham Council was concerned that this event could result in serious disorder.

“The Mayor and Councillors sent a clear message that there is no place in Newham for violence and intolerance. We are therefore pleased that the pub’s management cancelled the booking.”
