Labour candidate Moniba Khan won the Boleyn ward by-election.
Yesterday, residents of Boleyn went to the polls again, just six months after the local elections.
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Veronica Oakeshott, who stepped down to move closer to family.
With a turnout of just less than a quarter, the Labour candidate overwhelmingly took first place, with 1,725 votes.
Fazlul Karim, the Conservative candidate, came second with 327 votes, and the Green Party’s Frankie Rose Taylor took third with 172.
Arunasalam Pirapaharan, representing the Liberal Democrats, had 83 votes.
Moniba will join fellow Boleyn ward councillors, Genevieve Kitchen and Harvinder Singh Virdee.
Her election brings the total of Newham councillors back up to 60, with every councillor representing the Labour Party.
On Twitter, Ms Khan thanked her election agent, Alan Griffiths, and volunteers who helped her campaign.
She said: “I am super excited and looking forward to support [sic] the mayor’s manifesto pledges.”
She was congratulated on Twitter by Newham’s mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz, and East Ham MP, Stephen Timms.
