Birdwatchers have spotted a record 135 different species at Wanstead Flats in east London.
The ornithology fans flocked to the Flats and nearby Wanstead Park to get data for conservation management used by the City of London Corporation which manages the vast open space.
The rich mosaic of mature woodland, grassland, hawthorn broom scrub and small copses had breeding specialities such as Skylarks, Meadow Pipits and Common Whitethroats, according to the wildlife report by the Wren Group and Wanstead Birding bloggers.
Species also included record numbers of Wheatears and Common Redstarts in spring and Pied Flycatchers in autumn. The area is also good for Whinchats and Spotted Flycatchers, which break their autumn migration to Africa to linger awhile and fatten up before the long journey south.
London rarities also showed up, including Stone Curlew, Wryneck and Barred Warbler.
