A man who felt powerless to help his seriously ill partner has launched himself into action.

Emmanuel Obasi, from Beckton, could only stand by as his partner Ann Renwick underwent operations and chemotherapy for the breast cancer she was diagnosed with six years ago.

“To watch her going through that pain is sad for me,” said Emmanuel, 54, who lives on Goose Square. “I stand by her while she goes through pains and difficulties, and sometimes I feel totally helpless because there is nothing I can do to make the illness go away.”

The East Ham Conservatives leader said he decided to channel his frustration into the challenge of Total Warrior, while at the same time raising money for breast cancer.

The extreme sports event on August 1 sees thousands compete in a punishing 10k obstacle course, recognised as the ultimate stamina test.

“When I started training I could barely run 500m,” said Emmanuel, who has been training in Beckton District Park, opposite his house.

“It’s all very well saying ‘get better’ but doing something is a great support.”

The money raised will be split between Breast Cancer Care and Wooden Spoon.
