A cow at Newham City Farm has given birth to twin calves for the first time in its 37-year history.

Staff at the farm have been breeding cows since the Beckton farm, which is run by charity Community Links, opened.

On April 24 Primrose surprised staff at the farm by giving birth to twins.

Theresa Salmon, from the farm, said: “Multiple births are not very common in cattle who usually give birth to a single calf.

“It is the first time we have had twin calves at Newham City Farm and we are in our 37th year now! When cows do have twins the cow commonly rejects the second calf, but happily our cow has taken to both of her offspring and all are doing very well. The calves are fraternal twins, from two separate eggs as opposed to identical twins.”

Although Primrose is expected to stay at the Beckton farm, her calves, which have not yet been named, will be sold.
