Beat the Street walking campaign up for awards

A campaign to encourage walking has been nominated for two awards.
Beat The Street involved hundreds of primary school pupils from across Newham, as it gathered pace throughout the autumn, using tap-in technology to make walking a fun game.
Now Intelligent Health’s walking and cycling competition has been selected for two categories in the London Sport Awards 2015: the Make it Easier gong and the Resources Award.
The competition was held in Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Hackney, and saw around 22,000 youngsters walk nearly 104,000 miles in seven weeks.
The game saw the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park turned into a game, with players’ journeys recorded via cards tapped on Beat Boxes sensors.
“We are honoured to have been nominated for the London Sport Awards,” said Intelligent Health founder and chief executive Dr William Bird.
“Beat the Street East London created a real buzz in the four boroughs and as a result, many people and communities are now committed to making physical activity an integral part of their lives.”
The competition was funded by the National Charity Partnership, a collaboration between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and Tesco.
