A family business set up in 1920 is now in the 21st century thanks to a major transformation.

Alf Onnie in High Street North, East Ham which sells a range of tailor made soft furnishings including curtains and blinds, was approached by the BBC’s The Fixer to allow them to film the store as it was transformed.

The show is presented by Alex Polizzi who works with family run businesses and offers her expertise to help ‘fix’ them. She also stars in The Hotel Inspector on Channel 5.

The store, which is run by the Freedman family, underwent a complete transformation which also included new stock. It was launched to the public on Thursday by Jeremy and Kevin Freedman who donned 1920s style clothes and showed off their merchandise in an equally old cart up and down the High Street.

Jeremy, who is one of three brothers who run the business, said: “It used to look like an Aladdin’s cave. Everything was on top of everything else and there were nets everywhere because it was so small inside. Now its fantastic; it looks like a modern shop. Things are all well displayed and its easier to see everything. All our customers love it.”

The show featuring the store will be aired on BBC2 in February next year.
