Petrol-heads have a new enemy as the council prepares to ban “Fast and Furious style” street-racers.

At a meeting on Monday, councillors voted to introduce the borough’s first Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

Boy racers seeking to emulate Vin Diesel by putting residents at risk with stunts and races in Beckton, Royal Docks and Custom House wards could face a one-off fine of £100, with repeat offenders facing possible prosecution and fines up to £1,000.

It also bans motorcyclists cutting through Beckton District Park and New Beckton Park as well as enthusiasts illegally selling goods at races.

Cabinet member for crime and anti-social behaviour Cllr Unmesh Desai said it’s about time the reckless revvers had a deterrent.

“Their behaviour is completely anti-social and unacceptable with their incessant revving of engines, booming music and screeching tyres,” he said. “They perform reckless stunts which are dangerous and scary and they have been disturbing residents.

“These types of events have no place in our borough and I hope that with these new powers we will soon see the end of them.”

From April 2011 to September 2015, 281 reports of “vehicle nuisance” or “rowdy, inconsiderate behaviour” were made to the council.

The right to enforce PSPOs was introduced in March 2014 under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

The borough’s ban follows a public consultation, which ended in October and resulted in 94 per cent of respondents approving of the ban.
