BUDDING firefighters Alper Karabulut and Djamel Benadjaoud of Newham were proud to display their medals after completing a Jack Petchey awards scheme.

Alper and Djamel were among 60 young people to be presented with a Jack Petchey Outstanding Achievement Award at London Fire Brigade’s Southwark training centre by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson and Chairman of London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority’s Community Safety Committee, Cllr Susan Halll.

London Fire Commissioner Dobson said: “All these young people have made an outstanding contribution to their particular LIFE course and should be very proud of their achievements.

“The skills and sense of social responsibility they have learned will undoubtedly increase the range of opportunities available to them in the future.” During the five-day course, which is funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation, young people between the age of 13 and 17 learn fire fighting skills alongside real firefighters.
