West Ham United Women have paid tribute to a former manager who died last night.

Matt Beard died last night (September 20) aged 47.

Beard's career started at Millwall Lionesses in 2008.

He went on to take charge of Chelsea, Liverpool over two spells, West Ham United and Burnley.

He twice led teams to the Women's FA Cup Final, firstly with Chelsea in 2012 and then with West Ham in 2019, while he oversaw back-to-back WSL titles with Liverpool in 2013 and 2014.

West Ham Women said the club was "deeply shocked and saddened" to learn of his death.

On the team's social media pages, it wrote: "West Ham United is deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Matt Beard.

"The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the club are with Matt’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time."

The Women's Super League (WSL) also posted a tribute on X, saying: "Everyone at WSL Football extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Matt Beard following news of his passing.

"Matt played an instrumental role in the growth of women's football and will be missed by everyone associated with the game."
