A homeless man was found dead in the street from alcohol poisoning, a court has heard.
Krysztof Piotr Bartosik, 44, was found dead on October 12 in Forest Gate.
An inquest was opened into his death on Wednesday, December 18, at East London Coroner’s Court, Walthamstow.
“At the time of his death, Krysztof had no fixed abode,” said senior coroner Graeme Irvine.
“His death was discovered near some lock-up garages on Dean Street.”
The Metropolitan Police Service “undertook identification using pre-existing photographs of the deceased,” said Mr Irvine.
But they reported Mr Bartosik’s death to him for investigation when they were “unable to provide a clear cause of death”.
Mr Irvine ordered a post-mortem examination, which took place on October 17 – but there was a delay to the final report while the pathologist awaited the outcome of toxicology tests.
Mr Bartosik’s cause of death has now been given as acute ethanol toxicity and alcohol-related fatty liver disease.
As an unnatural death, it will be the subject of an inquest in open court.
Inquests are held in the public interest to investigate how unnatural deaths have occurred and whether future similar deaths might be avoidable.
Mr Irvine declared Mr Bartosik’s next of kin interested persons, meaning they have the right to scrutinise evidence before the inquest and question any witnesses called to give evidence.
He asked that the family provide “a general background statement” about Mr Bartosik, “including any concerns that they have regarding the death”.
He asked for the Met Police’s contemporaneous records of the incident and statements from the officers who attended the scene.
He also asked his coroner’s officers to investigate whether Mr Bartosik had been receiving support from any local drug or alcohol support agency.
If so, he said, he would need a statement from that service too.
The full inquest was set for May 30.
