A racing driver has set a new indoor speed world record in east London.

Jake Hughes, one of the stars of electric racing series Formula E, reached 135.9 miles per hour in a run at the ExCeL in the Royal Docks.

The attempt on Tuesday (July 25) smashed the previous Guinness World Record for the fastest speed by a vehicle indoors by more than 30mph.

It comes ahead of this weekend's finale of the Formula E world championship at the ExCeL, which will see two races on a unique indoor-outdoor layout.

Music stars Ella Eyre and Tinie Tempah will also be performing.

British driver Jake Dennis leads the driver's standings and is on the brink of securing the title.

Hughes, who races for the NEOM McLaren team, said setting the record was "a really special experience".

"It wasn’t something I ever imagined I’d have the opportunity to even attempt, so now to hold the record is pretty incredible", he added.

"When I was announced I was the record holder I felt a massive sense of pride.”
