Free laptops to help children do their homework online have been given to a mosque in Plaistow.
The 18 laptops were donated by Newham College to the Imambargha Shuda-e-Karbala Muslim centre in Barking Road in a campaign for more families in deprived communities to get onto the internet.
The gifts are part of a programme involving college principal Paul Stephen with East Ham's MP Sir Stephen Timms and Newham Council.
The collaboration with Masjid chairman Ali Shah was started in order to bridge a gap for children from poor families to improve their education.
“We acknowledge the current times and challenges as technology grows,” their spokesperson said. “We try to find solutions for those who are living in poverty and have no support for their education because of their environment.”
The new laptops mean the mosque can recycle its old IT equipment ready to send out to schools in poorer countries across the world.
