The Boundary Commission for England has revealed its latest plans for parliamentary constituencies in Newham.

It has unveiled the latest version of its proposals to reshape constituencies across east London as well as the whole country.

In a report published today (November 8), the commission has decided to keep its initial plans relating to the borough.

Its proposal is to create a sub-region of Newham and Tower Hamlets as well as to form one new constituency.

According to the report, this electoral area - to be called Stratford and Bow - crosses the River Lea between Stratford and New Town ward in Newham, and Bow East ward and Bromley North ward in Tower Hamlets.

Counter-proposals for a Poplar and Canning Town constituency, which existed between 1997 and 2010, were rejected.

The two boroughs would also be represented by Bethnal Green and Stepney, East Ham, Poplar and Limehouse, and West Ham and Beckton constituencies under the plans.

The move to five constituencies is because of the "significant growth in the number of electors in this area", the report said.

It added: "When constructing the four other constituencies for the sub-region, we tried to reflect the existing arrangement as closely as was practicable."

The plans also include the transfer of Beckton and Royal Docks wards from the East Ham constituency to the West Ham and Beckton constituency.

A final consultation has now opened for people to submit their views and will run until December 5.

The commission will then analyse the responses and form its final recommendations, which will be submitted to Parliament by July 2023.

Tim Bowden, secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: “Last year we published our initial proposals for new constituency boundaries – our first go at what the map should look like.

"We are delighted with the huge number of comments from members of the public on our initial proposals, many which included valuable evidence about local communities.

"We now believe we are close to the best map of constituencies that can be achieved under the rules we are working to.

"However, we still want people to tell us what they think of this latest map before we submit our final recommendations to Parliament next year."
