A trio of Newham venues have been confirmed as Olympic training bases for athletes in the run up to the London 2012 Games.
Athletes will be making use of the Terrence Macmillan Stadium in Plaistow (pictured) and The Hub, an indoor multi-sports centre in Canning Town.
The Stadium, in Prince Regent Lane, is currently used by Newham and Essex Beagles, one of the country’s top running club, which has spawned the stellar careers of homegrown talents including the reigning 400m Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu and middle-distance runner Mo Farah.
The newly-built Rokeby School, in Canning Town, will host indoor volleyball and martial arts specialists will be using Langdon School in East Ham for Taekwondo practice. Across London, the games organisers, LOCOG, is investing 10million in upgrading facilities to bring them up to world-class standards for use by athletes.
A delighted Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “In these tough times it’s important to remember the promises we’ve made to our residents about how we’re striving to ensure they will benefit from a Games legacy.”
