THE ROYAL Mint has been awarded with the contract to produce medals for London 2012.
A spokesman for the organisers, LOCOG, announced around 4,700 medals - Gold, Silver and Bronze, will be produced at the Mint’s headquarters in Llantrisant, South Wales.
Adam Lawrence, chief operating officer at the Mint, said: “As a UK manufacturer this is great news for the country, the 800 people we employ and our suppliers.”
A design for the medals is to be selected from a shortlist of invited artists by summer of next year.
LOCOG has not revealed how much the contract is worth.
